1st. July 2016 was the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

By the end of the battle on the 18th November,1916, although there are conflicting numbers, a safe estimate was a total of 1,200,000 dead and casualties. That's about 420,000 British and 200,000 French. German casualties were estimated to 500,000 with incidentals of another 20,000 at least.
